I was there from 81 to 82 and if you did not run the crabs over you was late for work

I ran over thousands of those in 1982 going to the farside of the island. when the tide came in you could not get back,to base until the tide went out again. Crab run!

I can tell yall the animals there now are protected. There are huge fines, not to mention military punishments if military personnel delibrately harmed animals there. Now I know we don't have "secret prisons" there. I knowl I was there tons of times ranging from a few days to several months.

They were not poachers. This base is a shame. The only reason the cats are still living is because the military wasn't able to catch them. Unlike the islander's dogs -- who were rounded up, shot, suffocated and burned alive in front of the children and families. As for the Chagos people, they were relocated by force to neighboring Mauritius where they were and continue to live in complete poverty. I think each family was compensated $1000 for the trip? Many of them have committed suicide.

If the "islanders" did return I'm sure it'd just be a matter of time before the sea turtles and coconut crabs were hunted to extinction leaving the rats, chickens and feral cats (all introduced by the "islanders") as the sole occupants of the paradise that is Diego.
