  • Have you tried using a tenkan first, so you was going for kote gashi? Then you switch the hands mid way, it's a safer way to avoid the attack, especially if they're attacking with a tanto/knife

I'll try to post a vid if you're interested, that wasn't very clear.

  • Yep, I kinda like the tenkan version too. As with all things, there are pro's and con's. This particular technique is somewhat smaller, and quicker though, and that's what I was going for in this series. What's not shown here is the power of an effective atemi. Realistically, my atemi to the face would be to a pressure point to stun the opponent. You could also use a body point to do the same. Thanks for the comment sir!

  • I hope I didn't sound like I was telling you a 'better' way. You're a MUCH higher grade than me, and your aikido is brilliant.

  • Nah, I wasn't offended in the least. Like I said, there are just different ways to handle different things. You just can't get locked into any of them or you're in trouble. And don't get too hung up on my "higher grade". Remember, judge a person's ability on just that. Not their fancy belt. My belt only covers about 2 inches of my butt. I have to be responsible for the rest of it. We get caught up in rank and affiliations. The true test should be on the mat (in my opinion).

  • Such a small movement to apply this technique, but jeeze, it doesn't take much at all to really put the pressure on. Nikyo is a nasty one!

  • Amen to that! I used to jokingly tell my students that nikyo was japanese for "OUCH!!!"

  • This video called "Is Nikkyo really an attack?" Seems pretty wierd to me please watch it and give me an answer, does this work?I mean to get yourself free from a Nikkyo?

  • i think it also translates to the same in Korean, HapKiDo has almost an identical technique we just put things together a little differently due to the philosophy of the style. Also very much like what you said about the belt & ranks, man that was right on the money.

I'm really enjoying your videos Sir, many thanks.

  • Nikyo is so cool. When done correctly it's as if Uke just puts himself right into it. It's also the most painful. The look on the faces of both the attacker and onlookers is magical indeed.

    Cheers.
