Veteranised habitat tree at Varsity Lakes Gold Coast a declining Lophostemon suaveolens with large numbers of habitat hollows, currently providing a home for at least one group of Myiagra cyanoleuca ~ satin flycatchers.
These kinds of trees provide important habitat niches for a large range of organisms many too small for us to easily identify.
The very important and largely misunderstood issue of actual risk of significant harm over the perception of any such risk is always one that comes up in relation to larger older trees.
I would be encouraging your council and its officers to develop approaches to the assessment of those risks that are reflective of current best practice.

Hi saveourfigs,
Yes we are lucky enough to have a team of qualified Arborists working within the Gold Coast City Council who are committed to not only recognising the value of trees such as this habitat tree....but more importantly are willing to work hard to accomodate the retention of these trees.

does the local council recognise how wonderful these trees are? our council would call them unsafe and chop them down.
