Christy springs this request for an old Sweeney's "Sea Shanty" on Andy which results in everyone cracking up!

The banter at the start of this video is an edited version of the original 1980 recording, where after Christy asks "Do you remember how it goes", Andy goes on at some length to explain how this song was a "Sea Shanty" and that sailors would sing this in unison whilst "Pulling on their Capstans"!!!!!
Donal & Christy found this hilarious and they were obviously in no fit state to continue to play, so to quieten things down, Andy went on to describe how he actually played in The Abbey Tavern, with Sweeney's Men, and in the middle of a long ballad, Johnny Moynihan leaned over to him and whispered, "Andy, do you know there's not a single person in the room listening to you".
He then said that he was "delighted that Sweeney's Men were popular today (1980) as nobody was interested back in the 60's."
After this long introduction, Christy fired back with "OK, Andy, off you go!", resulting in them all cracking up again!

  • Aparently this is actually an edited for TV version, seems Christy sprung the surprise on Andy and then while introducing the song, Andy said that alot of sailors used to sing this song in unison at nigh,,t while pulling on their capstains, that's what started them off laughing

  • Wish Andy's sailors luch pulling their capstans! They were pushed round with bars, but this is a hauling shanty anyway, to keep the rhythm when hauling on a brace or halyard. Great song anyway.

  • Where is the original recording? Is it available to view?

  • People ask why I'm a folkie. This is why.
