......... Now you want to keep the metal front (that is the liquid - solid interface) in focus. So you move the whole system vertically ( Obviously we know the solidification speed and the velocity of the front) and that's how we always see the front. Now how do we capture this??? YOu have to use heavy radiation such as a synchrontron..... That's what happened here. .........Got it ??

This people is research from Norway. If I am not mistaken it is an Al-Cu alloy.
There is thin sheet of metal ~50micron thick that is beeing held vertically.
The sheet of metal is inside some zircon glass that has been fused on the outside so the metal can't escape.
Now you have 2 clamps that hold top and bottom of that piece..... YOu increase the temperature on the clamps and you melt it. Now you cool one side slowly....and guess what..directional solidification.
