Cesare Siepi (b.1923)

"Visione veneziana", though rarely encountered these days, was a favorite of Titta Ruffo and many singers of his generation. Written by minor Italian composer Renato Brogi (1873-1924), the song is given a sterling performance here by a youthful Cesare Siepi, in a recording made for Cetra in 1948.

The suavity, elegance, and naturalness of delivery that marked Siepi's singing are already present, and there is plenty of ardor as well, without the occasional stiffness of his later years. Indeed, the vocal and artistic maturity here are quite remarkable for such a young singer! Siepi is accompanied by the Orchestra da Camera di Torino, conducted by Cesare Gallino.

  • We've had many outstanding basses and bassos cantante: Mardones, Journet, Plancon, Pinza, Pasero, Reizen, Hines, Frick, Tozzi, Diaz, Ramey, Pape -- there are probably more whom I'm forgetting. (Chaliapin was in a class by himself:)) But has any such singer had a voice more BEAUTIFUL than Siepi's? AND the man could pour forth resonant low Es as well as free, ringing top Fs ---

  • Believe it or not, my answer to your question is actually YES. Of course I love Siepi, but there is one bass that I esteem even more highly: the Russian basso profondo Boris Shtokolov, who had a dark, effortlessly produced, and velvety-smooth voice with a unique, achingly beautiful timbre. His diminuendos and floated pianissimos are unmatched by any other bass that I've heard. Try my YT postings of him singing "A letter to mother" and "Vecherniy zvon"; also Gremin'a aria and Aleko's cavatina.

  • I would love to have the lyrics for this song

  • I've got sheet music at last :)

  • Wonderful voice! I hadn't realized that he had passed away, so sad!

  • Hahaha, not a single dislike!

  • does anyone have scanned score of this song? Thanks in advance

  • @minnie888444 Dear Monica, HOW VERY TRUE! His voice emanates the terrible, tragic, bitter climax at the end.

  • This is so very DIVINE, SUBLIMELY AND HAUNTINGLY BEAUTIFUL! His rendition is filled with ARDENT PATHOS!

  • Siepi was one of the outstanding bassos of any era.Sadly,he passed away yesterday in Atlanta,Georgia, due to a stroke.Riposa in pace Maestro.Addio.You will be missed.

  • Does anyone know where I can get the sheet music for this piece? I've looked in all the libraries in my city and on one has it.

  • @stevevandien Amen.
