@Ebo9508 Sounds plausible, but still too risky. Even Derren Brown makes some mistakes, say one in 5,000 times. Some people are less influentiable. So I'm sure he wouldn't risk his life if there wasn't another hint.

And also, the BBC must have been persuaded in advance that the trick was absolutely safe.

He used embedded commands to persuade him to choose 1. Beginning at 3:17, "choose ONE of those numbers" . . . "choose ONE" . . . "THIS number, you choose NOW." He then checks to make sure the suggestion has taken hold by asking him to count from 1 - 6. He then gives another embedded command to "try and help me." As the guy is counting, Derren listens for annalogically marked out words. "1" and "5" were marked, 1 more than 5. Boom! Solved.
