Notes by Bob Erwig:
New Orleans legend Sidney Bechet, who introduced the soprano saxophone as a jazz instrument in the 1920's, recorded Viper Mad in 1938 with Noble Sissle's Swingsters. He roped in Sissle's vipers to sing: "Wrap your chops 'round this stick of tea / Blow this gage and get high with me / Good tea is my weakness, I know it's bad / It sends me gate and I can't wait, I'm viper mad."
This gives you an idea of the origin of this tune and also explains the hilarious introduction by banjoist Jimmy Mazzy and the amazing little jazz group named M'N'M.
Members are banjoist Jimmy Mazzy, tubaist Eli Newberger and clarinettist Joe Muranyi. Joe was the clarinet player with Louis Armstrong's All Stars between 1967 and 1971. Jimmy Mazzy, from the Boston area, has played for years as a solo performer, and tubaist Eli Newberger was the anchor in Boston's famous Black Eagle Jazz Band between 1970 and 2001.
They perform here at the 1996 Sancy Snow Jazz Festival in Mt. Dore in France.
All three have been playing for many years together in jazz festivals world-wide. The intimate jazz atmosphere they create is a combination of technique, control, jazz sense and good taste.
