Moxie - Rosin' The Beau

Since I have four instruments I'm playing around with now, I'm just going to label them according to their christen names.

Moxie for the five string, Neysa for the Gourd, Sprout for the Uke, and Kay for the Tenor. Why the hell not?

Anyway, here's my very first attempt at a song in 3/4 (waltz) time. The song is a beautiful old ballad called 'Rosin the Beau'. As far as I know this melody was also used by Abraham Lincoln for a campaign song called "Lincoln and Liberty".

At any rate, it's a fantastic instrumental, and I hope it shows through with my still decidedly underdeveloped skill.

Enjoy, and critiques are welcome as usual. I'm always looking to improve.

Nice Job and keep it up. No one starts out a professional banjo player absolutely no one. Also you are never to old to start. I play with a mountain dulcimer club. I have fiddle players I play with who are 80 years old, who just started playing 10 years ago and they rock! It is so much fun! start going to workshops and festivals you will learn a lot.

I'm glad you liked! :) It 's a great tune.

I don't follow the tab explicitly here but I liked how it sounded so I kept it - - I rarely play it the same way twice but it still comes out sounding pretty good. It's fun to just sit and pick the riffs in any old order.

And yeah, I'm acquiring a nice little collection. The Tenor looks like it'll be a lot of fun for rhythmic accompaniment once I get the hang of it.

It's tuned to standard Jazz tuning now, which is a nice versitile and flexible tuning but it's less friendly than the 5 string.

The Gourd is fun for just cutting loose and getting creative; the lack of frets actually makes it less stressful to play, believe it or not. It's like it's saying "Do whatever the hell you feel, buddy!"

I have all three flags there for a simple reason -- I am all those things: An American, a Southerner and a Floridian; all are important parts of what makes up Dan.

And thanks, Frailing/Clawhammer is a very expressive technique. It's really let me cut loose and have fun. And as for you being prepared to jam, all you need is to relax and have fun. For example, I goof up in the middle here, missing a shift to Em, but, hell, I just worked around it!
