CN ran a special train from Toronto to Halifax to bring 8 Euro Cargo "Class 66" JT42CWRM locomotives for export on a Jumbo ship to Europe. The train was pulled by CN Dash 9 2529 and the train had an idler flat on each end. The locomotive ran round its train at Basin Yard in Halifax and after dropping off one idler flat pushed the locomotives down a steep grade onto Pier 9.

The train is seen on 21 January 2010 at Windsor Junction, Bedford Basin entering Rockingham Yards, Fairview Junction and on the lead to Pier 9.

Conductor from Moncton to Halifax was Luc Doiron.

  • Thank you.

  • The wagon between the CN locomotive and class 66 is a Couple car (one car on one side with an automatic Couple and a chaincouple on the other) or that the brakes?

  • This wagon is often called a transition car and has a North American coupler (automatic) on one end and a hook and link (European) coupler on the other end. It also has brakes. The brakes on the locomotives are also operational - they just respond a little more slowly because the brake pipe diameter is smaller. This is why the export locomotives are no longer carried in regular freight trains - the brake shoes were worn out by the time they got to Halifax.

  • I believe there is a standard European coupling but I am sure that someone in Europe can answer.

  • Excellent video

beautiful locomotives for sale, are much in England

the box is above the cabin is air conditioning??

    greeting

  • Thanks Gustavo.

Yes I think the box on the roof is an air conditioner. Several VIA locomotives in Canada have recently received similar boxes on their roofs and these are air conditioners.

  • That's a very cool sight to see... nice work.

  • Look at how small they are compared to the GE!

  • A lot of new European equipment is coming with a 3 for 1 coupler. Can couple to knuckle, link pin, or hook and buffer.

  • @UnionPacificBNSF They use a screw link, a type of chain-based coupling.

  • What kind of couplers do those locomotives use.

  • @petro062 there going to holland, and then to france... not UK
