Pau Hana Slack Key was composed by George Kaapana, Led Kaapana's father. It was featured on Led's 2005 CD, "Ki Ho`alu." It's a bouncy number played in taropatch (open G) tuning. "Pau hana" means "done working" in Hawaiian and pau hana parties are a regular feature of island life.

My Aloha Friday in Downtown Pleasant Hill series was a lot of fun, but on July 31 we had special guests and even more fun than the rest. Ledward Kaapana joined me for the day, along with his sister, Lehua Kaapana Nash. Words cannot express the pleasure I felt in playing with these two masters of the art of slack key.

Both Lehua and her younger brother Ledward were raised in a remarkable musical family in the village of Kalapana on the Island of Hawai`i. They learned to sing and play from their mother, father, uncles, aunts, and when they play and sing together those long gone Kalapana days live again for a moment.

This video was recorded using a Sanyo Xacti HD2000. Audio is camera mic sound.

  • Plus the boys in her family got nothin' on her! Ui-ha! I am so glad you let us see her playing, Fran. Wow.

  • I'll keep an eye out for a copy of Lehua's CD to send you, Wanda. It's a gem. Led tells me that Lehua was Uncle Fred's favorite.
