We have taken over a derelict allotment and are busy restoring it. This video records our eventually successful attempt to build a greenhouse and fruit cage. The allotment is in Sunniside, Gateshead, in the North East of England.

  • no foundation?

  • @Kdnce There are foundations to the greenhouse. It was built on the site of a previous, brickbuild greenhouse. The foundations were still there when we took over the allotment though the greenhouse itself had been long demolished.

  • What are allotments? I always like to see vids from England...so different from here in the USA. Does it cost to have an allotment or does the government dole them out?

  • @zekehooper An allotment is just a patch of land used for growing crops. Ours is about an acre in size. It is privately owned but many local councils rent out allotments. They are not expensive. The rent on ours is about £35 a year.

  • don't have to burn all those trimming.. Research bio-char, make them into charcoal and incorporate them into the soil with proper organic fertilizer.

  • Greenhouses r off da hook!!!!! I love them!!

In the US it is generally known as a lot. Must be related root of these words.

  • Do you know what would be really funny, open the bottle of Elderflower in the greenhouse, wholla. I am starting my project over winter as I have an outlet from a glazing company for all their old window frames and I have the bricks for three courses and some old paving slabs for the base. It's just a big boys Meccano really. Thank you for posting.
