Heres a virtual movie of Muriel Rukeyser reading her short bittersweet poem, "In Our Time". The poem remarks upon the indifference of the modern world to the poets and original thinkers. In the olden days many poets were tried and executed for their thoughts expressed, but in the modern world she alludes to they are simply ignored like needles in a haystack of mass media. The sentiments in this poem have surely become evermore true in this new millenium of digital internet led communication where more is definitely not always better, and the voice of the individual becomes increasingly lost.
Muriel Rukeyser (15 December 1913 12 February 1980) was an American poet and political activist, best known for her poems about equality, feminism, social justice, and Judaism. Kenneth Rexroth said that she was the greatest poet of her "exact generation".

In our period, they say there is free speech. They say there is no penalty for poets, There is no penalty for writing poems. They say this. This is the penalty. -- Muriel Rukeyser, "In Our Time", The Speed of Darkness
