For one, it was the church, which I honestly belive was incredibly corrupt, that led the crusades, not the belivers in God. And about the whole thing about the witches, well, nearly everyone was over-the-top superstitious back then.

It was called the dark ages because there was no central government in Europe at all, just the feudal states. It ENDED when Charlemagne converted and united Europe. Learn your history.
