This is a demonstration of a young Border Collie at the beginning of training showing her natural instincts. It is a good example of what a Border Collie does naturally. We are fetching goats around the pen. She is keeping at the 6:00 position with myself at 12:00 if you think of a clock. Goats are in the middle.. She does do a little circling, but not bad. I can change her directions easily by lifting my arm as a block and stepping into her path. To stop her we back up to the fence and stop the motion and ask her to lie down in the correct position. This is how you would do a call off too. Step through the stock and block the dog from fetching again. Blocking the dogs movement eventually will get you a stopped dog whether standing or downing. Then you can catch them. You might need a stock stick or rake when you do this. I didn't need anything with this dog as she was very sensitive.

  • If ever a dog was born to work it's a BC. My BC didn't need any direction - she was very instinctive despite never meeting a sheep. If it moved, she herded it!

  • I really enjoyed that!! what a great dog and a very kind owner

  • @eninut

Yep, I can't wait to get mine this summer!

  • @Wolfsaver12x

Yeah it just comes naturally to them. They wouldn't be collies without the instinct, such brilliant dogs. I wouldn't change mine for the world

  • @eninut

There's nothing you can do to take out there natural instinct

  • i have a border collie and live on a farm u could call it and i always love to watch her herd the cows just bc she feels like it she will ussually jump over the fence and start doing her thing its a pretty awesome thing to witness

  • Among "man's best friends" border collies are the best
