Found this fascinating piece of archival footage recently. An interview by Laurie Oakes with the then newly appointed Governor General of Australia, His Excellency the Hon William Hayden AC. 1989 to 1996.

Mr. Hayden was arguably one of the most controversial appointments to the role due to his Republican & Atheist beliefs apart from being a very recent politician of course, his appointment to the highest unelected office in the land saw the first G-G to take office without at least a knighthood, these things were preemptions to his assent to the office of course & although of the liberal side of politics I thought Bill Hayden's tenure as Governor General proved that he was uncontroversial, professional & carried out his duties with the usual discretions & fairness the office traditionally should carry.

Apart from the insights given by Mr. Hayden there are a couple of time marks I'd like to draw the viewer's attention to. The first at the 02:37 mark & a skillful maneuver, or perhaps one could say the diplomatic / "manipumatic" way Laurie Oakes draws The G-G into making comment about one of his recent predecessors Sir John Kerr, one can almost read from Mr. Hayden that he was aware the great unmentionable Sir John was going to be raised during the progress of talk through photographs of past Governor's General & as a result a question or two on the matter was going to be unstoppable.

This subject & all that it entailed still divides Labour & Coalition supporters to this day no matter what their rank in society is.

The second time mark shows The G-G making comment that any man would be proud to give to his spouse & any spouse would be proud to hear in return at the 03:49 Indeed a smooth operator & a stylish administrator of The Commonwealth.

  • Thanks so much for posting this video. I liked the Haydens, especially Dallas. You just can't compare Bill with the current crop of Labor politicians ... I could have seen him in the role as PM, so quietly spoken ... not at all bombastic like Hawke. The only Labor politician I presently have any time for is Simon Crean. How I wish they would get rid of Gillard.
