This is how I destroy my old hard drives.
1) Wipe the hard drive using software with at least a 35 pass algorithm (7 pass is US DoD standard, but we want to do better than the government). That's if the hard drive is still working of course.
2) Remove all the cover screws, this will require a Torx bit [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torx ].
3) Extract the platters, you will need to align the read/write heads so they just fall out.
4) Rub each side of the platter(s) with a rare earth magnet [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neodymium_magnet ]. I don't use the rare earth magnet(s) contained in the hard drive because you can't get them close enough with their attached brackets.
5) Use a power sander on both sides of the platter. This step was skipped, it's a bit late for me to do that.
6) Bend the platter(s) and throw all the parts into the recycle bin!
OR
You can skip all of that and just use thermite.
Enjoy! :-)
You are a killer!
