That is correct to hold it at the base or the side of the cylinder. But with the newer frost free horns you can have one hand on the levers and the other on the horn.
Hold the extinguisher at the base ? Not sure that's a great method to be teaching your students, that's where it frosts up .. And the student won't know until he has to use one in anger as he is wearing gloves ...
