I live in England where we have a "free" health care system in the NHS. We also have Private if you can afford it. Private, as I've recently found out, is like a 5 star hotel compared to the NHS 3 star.

Everyone pays a separate tax contribution for the NHS, regardless if you have Private cover.

There are all sorts of arguements for and against our system but the bottom line is, to call ourselves a moral society we must care for each and every one of us, and that starts with our health.

I live in Austria, a "single payer" country like most of Europe.

My father was in the US Army and we went to military hospitals when we were sick. There was never a question about medical bills and our family was generally healthy and well-cared for. After his retirement the govt. started reducing his coverage and the avaiability of health care to retirees whom they had promised life-long care in reward for their service. 10 years later, he was forced to join a HMO. The insurance co. had won!

USA has a very expensive healthcare insurance. What USA needs to do, is not invent the wheel again, but just copy the most efficient healthcare system in the world. The Dutch healthcare system (lowest costs/best healthcare). Health powerhouse 2010 index. Over 200 years of experience. USA just 1.

We can bicker and squabble about the mechanics of provision of a healthy, well-educated workforce (for instance, should it be a locally maintained thing or a federally maintained thing), but it's pretty much a cold, hard fact that some of the things we currently view as private matters affect everyone by affecting the availability and relative efficacy of the labor pool. These include healthcare and education, there's simply no way around that. Mechanically speaking we NEED public healthcare.

I would assume it's reasonable to suggest that all people should pay in when public goods are concerned. Public goods are items which the population as a whole benefits from regardless of their relative individual contributions thereto. National defense, fire and police service, food safety, and environmental safety are prime examples.

The public as a whole benefits from a well-functioning economy, and this is spurred by a healthy, well-educated workforce. Ante up, folks. Pay for public goods.

With or without insurance it's expensive. I've resigned myself to the idea that if anything happens to me, I'm refusing healthcare. Let nature and cancer have it's way with me. At least I'll have a shit ton of money to blow (that I saved by not going to the doctor) and make my last few days pleasurable ones.
