Monica Johnson was being harassed and threatened by debt collectors until she fought back and sued. As Susan Koeppen reports, this is one of many similar cases.

  • That's one or two out of thousands of debt collectors. Those people were definitely fired. Do you think a debt collection agency wants to pay lawsuits and fines? All of these uneducated consumers are running up credit, not paying, then hollering harassment when it's time to pay their bills. Note ... she said if YOU ARE being harassed. That doesn't mean because a debt collector called and asked you to pay, you need to file a complaint. Ridiculous.

  • @jimiange Most people don't complain, but they should. The reason most people don't complain is that the debt collection agencies were successful in pushing through caps on settlements to absurdly low levels. The caps will never hold up to a court battle, and then people will probably come out of the woodwork to complain. I also don't recall defending people who legitimately owe the debt.

  • @GOPSUX100 The FTC received 80,000-90,000 complaints last year against agencies. Sounds like a lot right? well when you think about all the letters and call being generated it is miniscule. I know one company that sends over a 1,000,000, letters per month that is 12m per year and that is one small company. imagine how many are being sent or called and people think 80k is a lot? get a clue people the cons ripping creditors and poor money managment got us in this financial mess.

  • Something has to be done to stop the abuse. I volunteer to provided financial help to the elderly and low income people deal with financial issues. I cannot believe the number of people I have helped deal with debt collectors, in all but a few cases they absolutely did not owe ANY MONEY to these loser dirt bags.

I have seen debt collectors chasing the wrong person, relatives of the debtor, and already settled debts. People need to take these companies to court, there are far too many abuses.

  • Debt collectors typically have bad credit.
