Hi Leon,  Worked on Tarawa in 1985, as a carpenter, building a new house for the

Australian High Commisioner. Never heard about Tarawa before then.

It is ashame that Betio has not been considered a complete grave site.

I believe that because of the tropical heat, all bodies had to be buried very

quickly, preventing diseases, thus no grave sites.

When attenting a B-B-Q one evening in 1985 I was told that many remains

Tarawa was a bloody, hellacious battle, but it wasn't close to being the "bloodiest" battle in the Pacific. Alot of others battles - Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Guadalcanal, and the Phillipines, for instance - resulted in higher casualties.
