coreboot http://www.netbooknews.com Coreboot is a Linux layer in Chrome that handles the hardware. Recently Google updated the new code and now Chromebooks will be getting faster with Ivy Bridge Support.

That's 5 seconds from total power off. Not sleep, not deep sleep, but a complete boot cycle. That's coreboot, u-boot, load a kernel, start X, load a browser, connect to a network, show that screen.

Maybe on an SSD but not otherwise.

Depending on what's running, resuming from hibernation isn't always faster than booting

I'm sure you still can't access certain websites that use leading edge standards. Once Chromebook can actually play back Chrome Experiments graphics and videos, call me! Otherwise, don't make me waste my money again!

Doesn't really matter if it can boot fast, sleep/hibernation mode does the same job. Chromebooks are overpriced and useless for everything aside from basic browsing. Even the Intel guy uses a Mac.

Hopefully they step up the design and add some storage space unfortunately the whole only cloud initiative just doesn't cut it. Would like to see how the whole Motorola acquisition effects this.

They should be faster, with an actual ivy bridge processor, instead of the baby atom stuff.

I think UEFI is typically 3-5 seconds, depending on the quality of the hardware setup code, amount of hardware, et cetera
But they aren't actually exclusive. You can use core-boot as the hardware initialization step and use tianocore (an open source UEFI implementation (no really a suprise as the reference code provided is under a BSD license)) on top if you need to utilize any of it's boot or runtime services.
