Rest in Peace Dan Wheldon - 5 Lap Salute

The motor racing world lost one of it's great drivers today. The 33 year old two time Indy 500 winner Dan Wheldon was killed in a horrendous crash at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway during the final race of the 2011 IZOD IndyCar Series season...
Instead of showing how he died I want to show you how IndyCar paid tribute to Dan.

My thoughts and sympathies are with his family and friends

I was saddened to hear that Dan Wheldon had died but you motorsport is filled with death especially in Formula 1. The 1950 was the bloodiest decade in the sport of F1. The entire Scuderia Ferrari driver lineup was wipe out and death in the sport continued up to the Imola GP at San Marino where the weekend suffered two fatalities of Roland Ratzenberger and 3 time world champion Aryton Senna. No driver has been killed since Senna's death in Formula 1. Indy 2 deaths in 5 years, not good.

I was there, though we went back to the hotel before this happened. I didn't want to be in public when I found out what was going on, because we all suspected it. I still have dreams, though now instead of dreaming of that day, I dream of going back, standing at that spot in turn 2, reflecting, and paying my respects. One day, I'll go back to do just that.

The bit at when the cars all come out of the turn where 'IT' happened in perfect formation and then it shows them from above gleaming in the sun, and the Amazing Grace is playing too - really sad knowing that a champion died that day...great way to honour him though and great sign off line from the commentator :(
