can it be flown using hands only?

Regular copier paper has a high weight to area ratio and would be harder to fly with hands only. Maybe in really smooth air (like over a skating rink) you may succeed. But use the superior Indoor Paper Airplane Walkalong Glider design as it is much more stable. You would be the first to hand fly this design!

this is gonna sound stupid but what is a paddle, and what is it used for? sorry im a noob when it comes to gliders.

Not a stupid question. The paddle is a large rigid sheet of cardboard which you use to create an updraft under the paper airplane. Slope soaring uses wind blowing against a ridge. In controllable slope soaring the paddle works in a similar manner as the slope (or ridge) but on a much smaller scale and you are following the paper airplane around, instead of the glider being limited to following the lift created by the (mountain) slope.

this design has been improved upon in the "indoor paper airplane walkalong glider" instructable. It has many enhancements and is made from phone book paper.
