KSDK TV 5 NEWS OPEN - ST LOUIS, MISSOURI - 1987

This was one of my favorite opens, keying off the St Louis arch. KSDK, Gannett's NBC station, is the top station in the market.

Gannett owns KSDK, not Belo. And at the time of the open, they were owned by Multimedia.

When local people still controlled such things...Leonard Slatkin composed the theme, the STL Symphony played it, and Chuck Connors (not the actor) the voice of KSDK at the time voiced it. Connors is from STL as was the voice of the Sally Jesse Raphael show, too.

Nice use of the Westminster Chimes within a theme, that's what it seems to be inspired by.

That would Leonard Slatkin, composer, then conductor of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. He's now heading the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

I think it's majestic...the tag sounds a bit dreamy, though.
