Amazingly, Virtual Dub made a crystal clear video. Let's hope YouTube follows.

By the way, this is what would be the first level of Project MD, called Infinite Field. Yes, that's a 3D-like floor, and yes, that's a mirror effect you see. Also, managed to fix Echo, so now I'm working on making more sound effects (although I think the tool to make the FM instruments still needs working... the 1-up sound effect sounds completely wrong). Anyways, since it's the first level, you'll see more 1-ups and hearts than usual. After that the game is mean in that regard, though.

Yes, that's a double jump power-up. And yes, you can use the bomb power-up to break some floors. This was always there, so those that complained that power-ups are useless can shut up =P

(and no, the background isn't complete yet)

  • The 3D background looks great, reminds me of the level before the horse-boss in Alien Soldier. One thing you could do to make it even more 3D is to make the foreground tiles also 3D, you see the side of it except when you walk right under/above it. They did this on the first level of Adventures of Batman & Robin.

  • @KaskelotenZebbe The first level of that game didn't show anything at the sides of things... that area was shadowed so much that it'd appear black so you wouldn't notice.

  • This looks pretty good.

What program did you use to make the game?

  • @SpeedyLizzard14 Asm68k and z80-asm for assemblying and some custom tools to convert BMPs to tiles and such.

  • I wonder how it would look with the color of the red tiles and signs changed into the purple colors of the background grid / trees ?

  • @Christuserloeser Probably it'd look much less colorful. =/

  • Wow, this looks great! I'm interested in SMD dev myself. Are you intending to release an actual cart?

  • @sikthehedgehog I wonder what Yoshi's Cookie looked like in the Mega Drive version?

  • Was this done on Sega genesis hardware? If it is, then the graphics are incredible!

  • Those sound effects are making me feel wonderfully nostalgic for old PC-speaker-using games.

  • Glad to see you've been able to make a high quality video! Though, the framerate reduction used annoys me a bit, it can't be helped... unless you want to make your own 60fps video hosting service or something, heh.

  • @sikthehedgehog Would still be interesting to see. Sometimes less is more. And the enemies, obstacles and coins should still provide enough variation to spice things up.
