On the other end of the scale, some variables don't need to be that big. Some games use 16-bit or 8-bit variables, especially older ones when memory was at a premium.

2147483647 is maximum possible signed integer in 32 bit machines. If you add 1 to 2147483647 it can "warp" to -2147483648.

Tales of Destiny's battle system is weird. The tree, a mere enemy, can take about 2 billion points of damage and live. I don't get it.
