With a sigh of relief, Amelia regards the city and the white phantom of the cathedral, bathed in monnlight. Belfries near and far strike the hour. She becomes pensive.
Outside the open window the Lover is seen sliding down a rope on the balcony. The Husband is coming back: the Lover has just enough time to hide himself. The Husband paces mournfully up and down.Amelia, triumphant, butnot completely at ease, goes to the mirror and begins to primp, in as great haste as is feminely possible. At the same time she takes care to shield the Lover whenever the Husband pases near him. But as luck would have it, the Husband happens to look out on the balcony where the rope used by the Lover has been forgotten. He picks it up, comprehends, and begins, pistol in hand, to seck all over the room for the Lover.It is not difficult to find him. Then, with forced determination, he lowers the point of the pistol at the terror-struck lover. Amelia, hands over her ears, runs to a corner, with a prolonged scream....
