  • There's a great KXTV promotional film from the 1960s in which a man sings an ode to the tower, including great lyrics such as "high in a tower in the western sky." What's even better is that he is singing high up in the tower. It was featured on the KXTV website in 2005 for the station's 50th anniversary.

  • @jaybee1973jaybee

I've heard of that. I hope it ends up youtube at some point.

  • From the looks of things, about 1450 feet, give or take a foot or two.

  • @gladfan1989 :-)

  • @gladfan1989 Why yes, that is a very close approximation!

  • @eyeh8nbc I'm not sure which FM is there. Yeah, it looks like the rooms are set up for living in. It must have been pretty cool in the day, with the tubes and lots of meters, and things to tune.

  • @sdold I've seen pictures of inside that building and there was a vintage TV control room still there, from the days when they were required to have an actual person at the transmitter when broadcasting. What FM stations use this tower now? I just know channels 10 and 13 used it until they switched to a taller one in 1986.

  • @eyeh8nbc Hi - No, the elevator is still in use. The tower isn't used for normal TV broadcasting, but has a couple of backup transmitters for stations that are using other towers nearby. This tower does have FM broadcast running, as well as two-way, government and paging users. The 60's style building is still there, the place is kept up pretty well. I know what you mean, the building looks really jet-age :-)

  • Do you have to climb to get up there? Is the 1960s-era TV control room still at the base of the tower?

  • Why didn't you bring your parachute?
