Indigenous Communities Sexual Health Communications Program

In 2010, an Indigenous Communities Sexual Health Communications Program (ICSHCP) was conducted as part of the National STI Prevention Program: Sexual Health Campaign to support Indigenous media organisations to deliver tailored public information campaigns to their communities on the issue of sexually transmissible infections (STI).

The media partners broadcast to a wide area of rural and remote Australia including Townsville, Cape York and the Gulf, Torres Straits, Broome, Kimberley and Pallara, Central and Northern Desert, remote WA, SA, QLD, NSW and Tiwi, North East Arnhem and Darwin.

A range of activities were undertaken including the production of short content pieces for radio, television and online applications, radio programs with health professional guests discussing different sexual health topics, and outside broadcasts.

Content was broadcast in English and local languages including Walpiri, Yolngumatha, Murri Kriol, Torres Strait Islander Kriol, Kala Lagaw Ya, Pitjantjatjara and Arrente.

The media partners consulted with local health providers and opinion leaders, and involved local role models and young people to ensure accuracy and high relevance to the local community.

More information on the program, the media partners and access to media materials are available under 'Indigenous Resources' on the website - http://www.australia.gov.au/sti
