"Kara" means "because," "Da" is a basic state of being word (is, are, etc.) that is used either when no other particles (wa, ga, wo, etc.) are present, or to emphasize the fact that it IS something. Also, the polite form of "Da" is "Desu," but desu is at the end of every sentence (in polite speech) that doesn't have a masu verb
