NEXTING

NEXTING is comprised of altered footage from a popular MTV dating show, "NEXT." In the show, a stream of daters go in front of a camera to describe the mate attracting assets they hope will woo the person who has the power to reject them. Contestants appear again, after a denial (having been "nexted") to deliver an often cutting remark about their once time suitor.
By condensing these moments, the video NEXTING exposes the self-centered fantasy of having others treat us well while we simultaneously dominate them. After a dater has spoken, their face is quickly twisted into a kind caricature. Besides being humorous, these distortions can give a glimpse of the pain and/or horror that comes from being "discovered" and then rejected, or the cruel delight we feel when in a position to judge and punish of one another. The super-imposed grotesque faces carry within them the unnerving notion that in today's image-based culture, it may be more of a crime to be ugly that it is to be brutal.
