That's the problem with humanity, we think of our physical, even seemingly innocent needs more than the fact we are spiritually dead.

But by the grace of God we're are made alive to see that we need Christ and His living water more than anything else.

Uh...eh? John didn't say anything about that. What he did say is that the way the woman reacted in wanting the water Christ spoke of she wanted it for her own carnal needs. This reaction therefore is a reaction common from an unregenerate person where she couldn't see the spiritual implications of what Christ is telling her. She looks at it this way: "Just as long as what Christ offers fulfills her felt-needs she'll take a have at it."

it's important to go to church because God said Faith comes by hearing. God asked how will they hear unless they have a preacher Hebrews 10? So Faith comes by hearing from your pastor. And pastors were placed over flocks so that they might shepherd them. Also God said without faith it's IMPOSSIBLE to please Him. So putting these factors together, without church it's safe to say it's alost impossible to please Him, because how will you know how to FAITH in somebody you know nothing about....

yea, piper was just explaining the mindset of the most self proclaiming believers in america today.. we are full of selfish desires.. and dont realize what it means to truely be satisfied in knowing God.. but im positive he explains in detail what that means later in the sermon.. piper isnt the kind of guy who leaves you hangin on these things

The problem with this clip is that it is 2 minutes of a much larger sermon. It took my pastor several weeks to get through an exegetical examination of the text of John 4.

That said, Piper is making a valid point about the woman's lack of understanding at that point. It would be interesting, I think, to see whether the whole sermon is available somewhere. :)

I think what he meant was at that point in the conversation she was thinking of her physical needs instead of her spiritual needs. The woman and many in her town did get saved but that was after Jesus had explained more about the living water he was offering.
