Taylor Mali (http://taylormali.com), one of the most well-known poets to have emerged from the poetry slam movement and one of the few people in the world to have no job other than that of poet., gives his mind on what teachers make. Mali is a vocal advocate of teachers and the nobility of teaching, having himself spent nine years in the classroom teaching everything from English and history to math and S.A.T. test preparation.

He has performed and lectured for teachers all over the world, and his New Teacher Project has a goal of creating 1,000 new teachers through "poetry, persuasion, and perseverance."

Students can teach themselves by sitting with a textbook. Some textbooks are well written enough that if a student is willing, they can learn it by themselves.

That being said, the student has to be willing to learn by themselves. Not many student willingly choose to sit down and study when they have the opportunity to go out and play.

Just to point out, if I'm not being clear cus that happens with me a lot, I agree with the video and your views on teachers.

  • @adamswise

Students cannot teach themselves by sitting with a textbook, that is just plain wrong. Now if you want to talk about teachers being propagators of the status quo, that's the kind of teacher that wouldn't like this video. Teachers work with a set curriculum, but they actually have the opportunity to teach it in whatever ways they see fit, it's called differentiation. But you obviously wouldn't know that.

  • @adamswise norms that include institutional racism, and the socioeconomic castes that make up our society

  • Well this just reinforces what they always say about teachers... I'm sure I am going to get plenty of thumbs down for this but if your highest aspiration is to be a teacher, you're probably not that smart. there are plenty of ways to make a difference significantly more useful then teaching a set curriculum that most students could learn by sitting down with the textbook for a few days. Teachers are really no more than social facilitators in place to propagate the norms of society

*hugs* I agree hating is lame, for any reason. However, we still have lemmings and well-people need to break that cycle themselves and go their own way independently before they'll realize we're very diverse and no one is better than anyone else.

  • @mcolleenbecker oh no dont confuse the poor guy with so many reasons to hate you. Just be like "I am different from you" I'm pretty sure that's enough. Also hating people is lame as hell

  • im hearing harley from epic meal time, except a lot more eloquent.

  • That last line.. Wow.

  • @teresahegarty

I live in a poor district and everyone did all they could to help our classrooms out from extra crayons, tissues and notebooks. I understand how hard it is to supply every child with every thing they need.

  • @AyeJay99

Perhaps you should reconsider replying to my post because this is my response. The reason you believe this is because you've become nothing more than a lemming following the the people who choose WHO is next to hate. Native Americans, Blacks, Orientals, Middle Easterners, Muslims, Jews, Hispanics, Christians, Women, Unions, Poor, Uninsured, Unemployed and the list goes on. Who's next for you to hate on?

I am a Woman, Follower of Jesus, Single and a Union Worker. Hate me next?
