Anyone who thinks this is about a canary... or donkey, is a jackass. Research it. The record execs tried to pass that off in '71 to keep the song from being banned, but Rupert wouldn't play along. But it was becoming a hit so he agreed to changing a couple of words to please the censors. But the song was inspired by a story involving cannibalism... which he admitted.

One of the records in the video shows "Revised Lyric"--
What was revised?
The quality of this recording seems to be better than my 45.

@MusicMike2 I got mine on eBay for $5 in NM condition. Too bad it's only released in mono tho.

@MusicMike2 I believe this person is referencing MST3K during a host segment where Joel explains that rupert holmes wrote the Escape song because pina coladas were popular at that time. Sparking crow to ask about timothy and when was cannibalism popular? To which Joel assures that everyone knows that Timothy was a duck.

@Gigrantula58 lol! I wonder if MusicMike has a take on this? It's all Rupert Holmes' fault! lol!

@pointyguitarz Although the song tries to paint a rosy picture of a relationship reborn, it is human nature that either one or the other would still harbor a modicom of resentment for having to set out to cheat on him or her would set off a chain reaction of passive-aggressive behavior and bitter recrimination. It just doesn't make any sense, I don't blame you, however. Wait...is Timothy a duck?

@pointyguitarz Because not only by responding to the personal ads they're not only cheating on each other but cheating on each other with each other. Given that 72% of the American populace lives in a landlocked state, then how would they know if they liked making love in the dunes on the cape? It's also probably a one in a billion chance that this couple would actually answer each other's ads!
Rupert Holmes wrote a song about a drink that was once popular in modern American folklore. He also wrote a song about cannibalism. When was that popular?

@Gigrantula58 ---Huh? The pina colada continues to be a popular drink. You just listened to the "cannibalism" song.

@MusicMike2 So, cannibalism continues to be popular? I was speaking about the height of the Pina Colada song's popularity. Songwriters write songs that most people can identify. You identified with the Pina Colada song, who identifies with "Hungry as hell no food to eat And Joe said that he would sell his soul For just a piece of meat"?! By the way, great upload.

@Gigrantula58 -- Sorry, you confuse me. But....I'm glad you're participating!

One day the probable interpretation of this record popped into my late brother-in-law's head. Timothy, he realized, was not a man at all! Timothy was the canary that miners bring into the mine to see if they still have sufficient air. Thus the singer and Joe ate a bird, not a man. (Still, yucch!)

Rupert Holmes wrote this (Pina Colada). Regarding the canary being Timothy, the bird had to be quite large if their bellies were full as they could be...

This sounds great! What production! Really nice orchestration, too. Listening to this song on the radio when I was all of 15 and not knowing any better - because they kept saying "Timothy" in the refrain I thought it was from "Jesus Christ Superstar"! LOL!

I own a copy of the promo 45 that appears in your video, Mike - wonder how much it's worth these days!
