Hamiltonians Stepping Up for City Hall
Hamilton, ON - Monday November 26, 2008 - Councillor Brian McHattie (Ward 1)
Following the recent public appeal for donations towards paying for a limestone facade for City Hall, Hamiltonians have pledged over $38,000 towards the cause. Ward 1 Councillor, Brian McHattie praised the effort saying I am impressed by the quick response. Hamiltonians have proved they have a lot of civic pride.
"Im hopeful that enough residents will come forward to ensure this project is done right." Councillor McHattie added. "As a council we need to both spend wisely but still have the courage to preserve our civic heritage and legacy." He added that this could make a lasting Christmas gift.
The extra cost of limestone is $2.95M. A contribution to use limestone, a material that preserves the design and heritage designation of the building is $65.00 per square foot.
Councillor McHattie notes that it is important to maintain the construction schedule of the City Hall rehabilitation project; therefore City staff must order the façade material, currently concrete, by December 10.
Charitable receipts will be issued by the City of Hamilton.
Individuals, businesses and organizations can make their pledges to support limestone for City Hall through bmchattie@hamilton.ca or 905-546-2416.
Let's protect our architectural heritage by installing natural stone. If we allow our city hall to be covered in concrete, will go down in history as an insensitive community. We can do better and we must.
