Illegal logging: African stories

Illegaal gekapt hout komt nog steeds massaal op de Europese markt: eenvijfde van de totale import is illegaal of verdacht. In deze video horen we van inwoners van Liberia en Kameroen wat de impact van illegale houtkap is op hun dagelijks leven. Vernietigde akkers, verbroken beloften, klimaatverandering en het verdwijnen van dieren- en plantensoorten.
De Europese Unie kan de handel in illegaal gekapt hout tegengaan, en ervoor te zorgen dat consumenten alleen nog maar legaal hout aantreffen in de winkels. Minister Verburg moet met haar Europese collega's zorgen voor een sterke FLEGT-wet (Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade). Deze laat al sinds 2003 op zich wachten.

Illegally logged tiimber is still traded abundantly at the European market. In these testimonials, people from Liberia and Cameroon tell us about the impact illegal logging has on their daily lives. Destroyed fields, broken promises, climate change and disappearing species.
The European Union can combat the trade in illegally logged timber, by laying down a strong FLEGT-Law (Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade).

hi Milieudefensie. I am working for an NGO in Berlin (weed). At the moment we are producing a video about the EU trade and investment policy on raw materials that is pushing for open markets and investor protection in the South on the behalf of European companies instead of reducing the own overconsumption here in Europe.
