Scahill can be so tedious sometimes. The celebrations we saw in the streets may not be particularly dignified, but they are 100% typical of what people all over the world do when their enemy is brought to justice. The message it sends is that Americans are like everyone else: no better, no worse. The notion that people should not be happy, only "sad and reflective" is just a bullsh*t way for him to emphasize what he cares about most: criticizing the Iraq war.

those people cheering over the killing that night made me feel disgusted as an american. it was just so out of line. they should have held a candle light vigil at ground zero to honor the victims of 911. just silence and prayers for the victims would have shown the world how graciously civilized we are. it would have made it harder for terrorist to recruit people who saw how peaceful and somber. it would have truly honored the victims of 911 as a closure type event.
