Pakistan's Buner Valley "Subdued"

Villages in Pakistan's north-west Buner are subdued after
four days of battles between government troops and the Taliban.
Tiny villages in Pakistan's Buner Valley looked like ghost towns.

Alleys were deserted, markets closed and the local mosque was almost empty at prayer time.

Pakistan's army launched an offensive to try to evict Taliban militants from the valley -- just 100 km northwest of the capital Islamabad -- last week.

Some 60 militants were killed in the fighting.

Government forces took control of Buner's main town, Daggar.

But militants still control parts of the valley.

The two sides reached a peace deal this year allowing Sharia law to be adopted in large parts of Malakand division - which includes Buner, the Swat Valley and Lower Dir - in return for the Taliban laying down arms.

But locals of Jawar village say it still hasn't been enforced.

[Sawab Khan, Local Resident (Pashto)]:

"The government is still following the old system. The old law is still in vogue. The new sharia -- Islamic law -- has not been imposed yet."

[Haji Noor Mohammad, Local Trader (Pashto)]:

"We should be given the Islam (law) that the local people like. We will be happy to get that. We do not want anything else. There should be Islam, there should be brotherhood."

Elsewhere in the valley, fighting was still going on.

Militants have unleashed a campaign of suicide and bomb attacks across Pakistan for several years.

But their creeping advances in parts of the North West Frontier Province have sent jitters across Pakistan, sounding alarm bells in the U.S. about the stability of its nuclear-armed ally.

Pakistani military officials said troops were securing the Buner Valley at a slower pace to avoid civilian losses.

Hundreds of families have been streaming out of the valley, their vehicles laden with belongings in recent days.

I totally agree with you. They are wearing the mask of Pashtuns but they are not. They are an insult for Pashtuns in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
