Strumming rhythm guitar and playing a melody line together is a different sort of solo guitar playing than standard fingerpicking. It requires a new skill set and type of coordination. John Standefer employs this technique in his arrangement of 'Man of Constant Sorrow' and other pieces. See how it's done.

  • This is awesome. I'm just starting guitar and want to finger pick more. Do you use the pads of your fingers or do you use your nails when fingerpicking. And what do you suggest for a beginner to practice.

  • @GageMassoli The answer is actually 'both'. Good fat tone comes from the pad of the finger and sharp crisp attack comes from the nail. As I start to play a note it's the pad of my finger that begins the stroke. Then at the completion the nail slides over the string creating the 'tick' more like a pick would. The combination of pad and nail gives you the overall best sound. - John
