Association Football has been called soccer in Britain for well over a hundred years - an abbreviation of 'Association' to distinguish it from Rugby and the Americans took it up - they didn't invent it -. for similar reasons). If you check out the football books and magazibes in the 1950s and 60s, many, maybe most, had soccer in the title. Try books by Tommy Docherty, Bobby Charlton, Tommy Lawton (My Twenty Years in Soccer, published 1955). Why are so many alleged fans so ignorant of this?
