In any given month, 800,000 Canadians visit a food bank. Many live in rural areas, and almost half are children.
Drive Away Hunger raises awareness of rural hunger issues, and has collected food in Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. It started as an idea of a Farm Credit Canada employee, who decided to drive a tractor across mid-western Ontario to fight hunger in his own community. In 2006, Drive Away Hunger collected more than 400,000 pounds of food, and enjoyed the support of more than 100 employee volunteers.
Established in 1996, the Imagine Canada's Canadian Business & Community Partnership Awards recognize and celebrate outstanding partnerships between business and nonprofit organizations that are finding innovative ways to support and strengthen Canadian communities.
