This is a quick vid showing the exothermic crystallisation reaction (or chemical reaction) of a simple hand warmer. Heating of the hand-warmer is triggered by snapping a small metal device which generates shock waves to initiate crystallisation.

I've slowed the reaction down to 30% (from 0:18 - 0:30) using Optical Flow in Apple's Motion 3.

  • Does it only work once?

  • no it recharges by being heated in boiling water - the solidified solution turns clear again and the whole process can be repeated - im not sure how many times but its a LOT!

  • @iAmSPRUCEY92 solitude by Phil Holland

  • its a physical change not a chemical reaction :P

  • @adigal123 its sodium acetate

It doesnt go back by its self! you have to boil it in hot water on the cooker for about 10 minutes !

  • is it a special time of metal or can you use any?

  • yep, if that doesnt work try putting the handwarmer in boiling water for 10mins, that usually reactivates and recharges the solution and crystalisation process.

  • how do i make this xD?

  • ive got 1 and its not goin bak to complete liquid to press the thing and make wax agen
