Malaguena on the Oud

This is a song that's supposed to be played on classical guitar but I'm trying to get used to my Oud since I got it not too long ago, so here it is =P

I just dont understand how you know where to place your fingers on the Oud?

Normally I'm supposed to do it without having to look, but there are cracks in the wood of the neck that I like to use as references, so I'd essentially be cheating. ;)
