Zum 15. Jahrestag der Berliner Luftbrücke am 26. Juni 1963 besuchte Kennedy West-Berlin. Vor dem Rathaus Schöneberg hielt er seine berühmte Rede, in der er an der Seite des damaligen Regierenden Bürgermeisters Willy Brandt seinen berühmten Satz sagte: „Ich bin ein Berliner. Kennedy sagte auch zukünftig der Stadt und Deutschland die Unterstützung der USA als alliierter Schutzmacht zu.
