Europe has always been divided. There has always been "us" and "them". In the XXth century: fascism, anti-fascism; communism, capitalism. And before that there were divisions based on the national (French nation versus British nation) or religious ideas.
Today there are a lot of divisions, but no definite division, so I'm wondering what will come next, what will be that big division, that always appears on our way of consolidating a strong united Europe. And you know what? I think it will be fascism again. Actually fascism against Russia and some resistance groups (maybe entire countries) in Western Europe.
Let's face the evidence. WWII Nazi "heroes" receive official military awards in some eastern European states. In august 2008 we could see a modern attempt of genocide, when Georgia tried to kill all Ossetians and Abkhazians. Baltic states managed to convince the OSCE that stalinism was... let's say as bad as nazism in the WWII.
OK, pause there. Yes, Stalin was a mass murderer ... in Russia. He killed millions... in Russia. And despite he killed people regardless of their nationality, we must hate him for all that.
Now, you can't compare him with Hilter. Hitler killed millions of people all over the world, most of them Russians, other Slavic peoples, and Jews. Stalin was a paranoid murderer. Hitler was a genocide architect.
Russia won the WWII, and I don't care that Stalin was the leader then, because this victory belongs to the multinational people of the former Soviet Union. We shall NEVER forget that! Because with idiotic resolutions like this one modern fascists want us forget about that victory.
So let's remember those Soviet soldiers that fought for all of us.
Я Помню! Я Горжусь!

I don't hate Stalin. Why should I? The man stopped Hitler. Better Stalin than Hitler.

Soviet people stopped Hitler. Stalin not only killed thousands of Russians, he wasn't very good at the war either. For example, they warned him about the invasion, but he didn't believe them, so the invasion was a "total surprise" for him.

You would have preferred Hitler to win?
karimberdi 2 years ago
Of course not! That's crazy!
I'm just saying that Stalin doesn't deserve to be remembered as a "savior" of any sort. Soviet/Russian people saved the world in that war. And maybe with a different leader Russia could've won with less suffering.

I know what you're saying but we don't live in a black and white world. Stalin did, after all, industrialize the USSR, and that's what really saved Russia. Russia needed the planes, the tanks and the guns to win that war. Stalin turned the USSR into a superpower.

I think Putin said about this pretty accurately (article from The Voice of Russia):
"VVladimir Putin at his Q&A session said that an unacceptable price was paid for the achirvements reached in Stalins times. Vladimir Putin said its unacceptable to gain results through repression. Stalins times were an era of the cult of personality and of mass crimes against the nation. Putin said that the question about his attitude to Stalin is tricky as no answer will be satisfactory...

...He said this issue is widely discussed. The Prime Minister said that the country had totally changed in the period from 1924 to 1953, turning into an industrial power from an agricultural one, though no peasants had survived as a class and we all remember lines for food. Still Putin said that we won the Great Patriotic War and no one can throw a stone at the victors. If we had lost the war the aftermath would have been much more disastrous."
