This is my new and improved music version of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven."

To me, the raven is a metaphor. The narrator is delusional and in denial and the raven represents the darkest part of himself. The song isn't literally about a raven being in his room. To me, it has always been about a man slowly losing his sanity throughout the course of the poem because he cannot come to terms with the fact that the love of his life is dead. And he eventually goes mad. I tried to convey that progression into madness through the music and vocals.

With my previous two versions, which were solely guitar layers, I had terribly amateur equipment to work with, using laptop microphones and free recording programs like audacity and garageband.

This time, I used Logic Pro, a nice midi keyboard, a Martin guitar, a mixer, and multi-thousand dollar microphones. The result is a drastically better sound quality (although I still recorded every single layer in my bedroom or closet) and not in a studio).

I hope you enjoy this music version of the greatest poem ever written!

Oh, and since the actual video is just of some pictures I thought appropriate (I didn't put too much work into the video itself), I threw in an easter egg: in every single picture is a hidden little black cat. The black cat is one that I know personally named Oskar. He belongs to my girlfriend. See if you can find him in each picture. Sometimes he's obvious, other times he's very hidden.

  • I would say I appreciate it, except for the "improved" part. It's no better than the original.

  • @bcclark81 lol thanks for the honesty... I said improved because the sound quality is inarguably much better, for the first time I used studio quality microphones and professional recording/mixing software, and I spent probably four times as much time on this version as any other. If you think the original is better overall, that's cool!

  • I don't think Edgar Allen Poe would ever knock interpretation... as would no poet of an calibre at all :)

It's all personal, and so It Must Be.

  • In my opinion E.A.Poe would turn around in his grave if he heard this. But everybody has a different music taste and a lot of people seem to like it so...congratulations!

  • Has a Nightmare Before Christmas feel to it! I love it!

  • I love the poem, I love Edgar Allen Poe and I love this song. I kinda hate one thing, the fact that you stole my idea of putting this poem to music. LOL I love it! This shows me it works. Now for a metal cover for this metal-head.

  • Great job, man. This gave me the chills. Great poem, and great reading! I love this version!
