You didn't continue the lyric: "down to the skin and stone" which brings to mind the phrase "skin and bone". So this use of "skin and stone" is a poetic substitute for the single word "bone". Their lyrics are meant to create images, and in this case aren't meant to be taken literally.

I really like the Mars Volta. I know a lot of Spanish speakers can't translate what they say though (I don't speak spanish so I wouldn't know). I wonder if it was intentional or just from not caring. I am all for people not policing each other so we can all communicate and be humble when trying to speak in other languages, but to just jumble stuff up and pass it off as spanish is kind of strange. Shakira has been known to use idioms that don't translate well but she's forgiven. (poem to a horse)

french singer Zazie actually has been given a term in her language for them because she uses so many in French, they are called 'zazie-isms'

I hope you're not a fan of the Mars Volta. Their music is chock-full of grammatical errors and made up words. Not to mention the fact they used a lot of "Spanglish" on their first two records.
