Punching at a boxer who would have that guard and count on counterpunching something like that is going to get your head knocked off (of course kicking and biting or taking down a boxer is much preferred and effective). So when finger-jabbing or clawing of anything of that nature, keep your opposite hand on guard to A) make the strike more powerful and B) offer an effective means of defense in the case of a counter-punch or a "lucky shot" that may result from the absence of one.

Kinda. It's not so much boxing as it is simple defense. Boxers ave the tendency to keep their guard hand knuckle-by/on-chin, which wouldn't make sense for us- it doesn't protect the whole body. But keeping your hand opposite of your striking hand on guard is much better than leaving it hanging by your side doing nothing.

Keep your guard hand up? You mean like boxing or something?
This Video was originaly about 13 min long. It had to be cut down to 10 min to play here. You can see the whole video at google videos.
