I agree with what you are saying.
It seems to me like Liszt wanted to make the piano "a small orchestra" .
And also Mazeppa is a very artistic, dramatic and awesome piece of music - very underrated in my opinion.

Le peintre est Horace Vernet et l'écrivain qui a inspiré Ferenc Lizst pour l'écriture de Mazeppa est Victor Hugo dans Les Orientales.

last year I heared "Mazeppa" played by organ & piano, and this is version prepared by Liszt.
Maybe Liszt wanted to make the piano "a small orchestra" but I think he was know that the organ are like big orchestra

@DesAbends Is not easy to make the orchestra to play together when the tempo is faster than this in this kind of music. It couldn't be faster cause it'll be a mess.
the tempo here is slower than the interpreations from the pianists posted on youtube
